Regression bug with HTML formatted email

Tags: 8.5 8.5.1 Lotus Notes SPR VNTR7UP3CD

Recently one of our customers contacted us with a support question regarding some HTML formatted emails.

R8.5.0 & 8.5.0 FP1 users can not forward or reply with history on some HTML formatted emails, like for example a reservation confirmation email sent by Hilton/DoubleTree hotels.

When accessing the email the messages loads correctly, but the status bar at the bottom of the screen shows 'Document attachment is invalid'.
Closing the message and opening it again will show a popup with the same message that the user needs to click on to be able to continue.

When trying to forward/reply with history, the error 'Cannot save bitmap to disk' appears when you click on Save as draft or Send/Send and File and you can not continue.

I have tried the suggestion in this knowledgebase document (Actions-More-Copy into new message) but this has no effect.
Selecting the body of the message and using Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V to paste it into a new message also has no effect.

I then opened a PMR with IBM about this problem and IBM responded that this will be fixed in the first fixpack for 8.5.1 or 8.5.2.
Which indicates that this problem may still exist in the currently shipping 8.5.1 client, although I have not been able to reproduce this error using an 8.5.1 client.

The support rep that I talked to also stated that because our customer does not have a premium support contract requesting a hotfix is not an option.

If you have encountered this problem, please contact IBM to add more weight to this SPR:

Your issue has been identified in Lotus Notes SPR # VNTR7UP3CD "Cannot Save Bitmap To Disk When Replying With History or Forwarding A Message In Notes Client". This is still an open SPR, no solution has been found yet, but it has been planned for 8.5.2 and 8.5.1 FPx and it has a high triage priority.
For the moment there is nothing I can do, except adding a customer report to the SPR to add weight and a reproducible scenario.

Current solutions (at least for the cases that I have encountered):
Downgrade to R7.0.x
Upgrade to 8.5.1
Use webmail to Reply with history/Forward these messages.
